2008 antivirus Avast! 4.8 Home edition review and download
I have been using Avast for many years. It used to be the only antivirus I would install on computers because the software is free.  One of the key features of this antivirus is its always on protection. Avast antivirus has the ability to actively clean virus and spyware threats.  The always on protection or resident scanner is what separates avast from the many other free antivirus offerings. There are simply only a handful of antivirus programs that offer this feature.  Avast is also very effective at cleaning viruses.  The scanning engine is able to scan a computer's hard drive in about twenty minutes.  Avast also includes 6 other antivirus protection modules. One of them being the network scanner.  The network scanner is activated on top of the already always on protection.  The network scanner will detect bad products or malicious software as they are downloaded from the internet.  This kind of protection is great for lime wire and bitorrent P2P programs because viruses may be included with torrents or downloaded software.  Honestly, to get all of this protection in one program is like having enterprise antivirus protection for the home user (Hence, Avast is a great deal.)  Unfortunately, Avast has draw backs. One being that unlike Symantec's norton antivirus, Avast isn't as established as Symantec is.  What I mean is that Symantec invests a significant amount of resources and money (probably the most out of any antivirus company) into virus discovery and cleaning.  Avast also has another disadvantage.  Avast must be registered every 14 months (Norton Security Scan has a lifetime subscription).  While Avast's registration is free, it is kind of a hassle because a computer maybe left without protection because the subscription ran out. Avast 4.8 can be downloaded from the Avast website.
Girsoft AVG Free now has released AVG 8
Girsoft has a released a new version of the award winning free AVG in its 8.0 program. I really like free AVG because it has been a free antivirus download from its conception. Now free AVG antivirus has had almost 70 million downloads worldwide.  That is really impressive given the fact that Girsoft AVG antivirus went from a small company now to a full service antivirus company that provides multiple antivirus solutions and downloads.  Free Avg 8.0 now has cleaned up interface similar to Avast's interface.  The menu will report all of AVG's active modules or virus scanners. Unfortunately, AVG lacks active protection relying on scheduling antivirus scans.  This is unfortunately where Avast has the advantage over AVG.  However, with either antivirus download one should have satisfactory computer protection.  Also for even more protection, consider the antivirus that are available on the homepage because they can supplement AVG or Avast downloads.
Free antivirus Norton Security Scan, which can be installed an addition to any antivirus, is available from the homepage. Click here to go to the homepage.
