I recently have come across a devastating virus. The virus pretends to be an antivirus program. The software installs by prompting you on a suspicious website that your computer is "infected." The browser pop up window will look exactly like a real antivirus program that has probably pop upped on your Windows Vista or XP desktop to warn you of an actual virus threat or windows update. Unfortunately, most users will mistake this popup window for their antivirus program and click on it. As just discussed above, be wary of virus notices that pop up on your computer to warn you about some bogus infection. I recently found out that this type of bogus antivirus is being distributed in bit torrent files. Some one I met had downloaded a bittorrent file. They unzipped the file and everything appeared to be normal. But after they clicked setup.exe a DOS window appeared and antivirus pop ups started to happen. I have this option enabled on a Core 2 duo Quad and I am not able to detect a slowdown while having increased antivirus protection.
