Footnote: I think everyone should know about something I came across the other day. A friend gave me a usb flash drive (removable drive) to load some pictures on my computer. When the drive was put into my computer a file automatically launched. The file turned out to be a virus. Lucky for me, I had free avg antivirus 8.0 software (reviewed in the June 2008 column) which was able to catch the virus and successfully delete the problem. I believe AVG removable disk protection saved the day. I encourage you to learn from this experience. Make sure that you also have some sort of antivirus program installed to prevent such a stealthy infection.

Interestingly, there is also antivirus that be entirely installed onto a flash drive. The website is called portableapps.com. The website offers free clamwin antivirus software which can be run off of a flash drive to scan a computer for viruses and spyware. The portableapps software also includes many other free open source programs that can be entirely contained on a flash drive. For example, Open office a word processing program and firefox. This will allow you to take all of these software programs and antivirus to any computer and use them like it was your own desktop.

While there are many antivirus programs on the market, most antivirus company's are privately held. However, the internet has allowed developers to create a completely open source antivirus program. The software called clamwin is made by people in their spare time and is constantly improved by a large community. Interestingly, users can also submit there own virus definition additions to Clamwin. The community definition updating clearly adds a alot of value to Clamwin antivirus. The community could potentially be much larger than other single antivirus company's virus discovery teams (maybe even more effective in some circumstances.) The software is also windows compatible and can be updated. Clamwin has surprisingly good performance and scores well on antivirus tests. Unfortunately, the software lacks always on antivirus protection. Therefore, I recommend you use Clamwin antivirus strictly as an addon to your already existing antivirus protection.
